Eugenia Kuran

Eugenia (Jean) Jewell Christopher Kuran, 83 of Carmichaels, Pa., died of pancreatic cancer at 10:18 A.M. on Monday, December 25, 2006 at Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg, Pa. She was born April 19, 1923 in Pisgah, Preston County, W. Va., a daughter of the late Kermit Ray and Mary Charlotte O'Neal Christopher. Mrs. Kuran was an active member of the Greene Valley Presbyterian Church in Carmichaels where she served as a deaconess and a member of the Chancel Choir, Women In the Church, Joy Sunday School Class and the Circle Bible Study group. She was a 1940 graduate of Point Marion High School and attended Waynesburg College. During World War II, Mrs. Kuran worked as a silver solderer and aluminum brazier in the radar department of Yale and Towne in Stamford, Conn. She married Michael Jonas Kuran, her husband of 47 years, in Stamford, Conn. He passed away July 8, 1990. She and her late husband owned and operated a restaurant in Gettysburg for five years and she was affiliated with her father in the grocery business in the Dilliner area for several years. Mrs. Kuran retired from the Greene County office of the Observer Publishing Company in 1988 after 25 years of service. She enjoyed traveling and did so extensively, visiting all fifty states of the United States, Mexico, Canada, Europe, the Holy Land, Australia and New Zealand. Mrs. Kuran was known for the thousands of jars of red raspberry jam she made and gave to friends and relatives all over the United States. For years many people have visited her lawn and patio to see the hundreds of hummingbirds which summered there. Surviving are four daughters, Colleen K. Walkley and her husband, James of Middlebury, Conn., Sherri J. Kuran of Waynesburg, Pa., Suzanne K. Plachta and her husband, Joseph of Clarksville, Pa. and Kathy L. Kuran of St Thomas, Virgin Islands; two grandchildren, Michael J. Plachta and Jessica M. Plachta; three sisters, Doreen C. Kauffman of Harrisburg, Pa., Marie C. Simmons of Waynesburg and Shirley C. Romine of Dallas, Tex.; five brothers, Larry Christopher of Casa Grande, Ariz., Eldon Christopher of Waynesburg and Sheldon Christopher, John Christopher and Gary Christopher, all of Carmichaels and 22 nieces and nephews. Deceased are three sisters, Kathleen Rae Christopher, Lois Wogksch Kimpel and Dixie Robinson and a brother, Kermit Ray Christopher. Family and friends are welcomed from 7 to 9 P.M. on Wednesday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. on Thursday in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Martin J. Yoskovich, Funeral Director, 300 South Vine Street, Carmichaels. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, December 29, 2006 at the Greene Valley Presbyterian Church, 104 E. Greene St., Carmichaels with the Rev. Harold O. Kelley officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Bruceton Mills (Pisgah), W. Va. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to either the memorial fund of the Greene Valley Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 363, Carmichaels, PA 15320, or to Hospice Care of the Washington Hospital, 155 Wilson Ave., Washington, PA 15301 or to the American Cancer Society, P. O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718.
