James E. Moreland, 88, of Spraggs, Pa. and formerly of Pittsburgh, Pa., died at 8:40 P. M. on Saturday, June 14, 2008 at his home after a lengthy illness. He was born May 20, 1920 in Oil City, Pa., a son of the late Harry Clay and Rachel (Rees) Moreland. Mr. Moreland was a 1938 graduate of Oil City High School and attended the the University of Pittsburgh. During World War II, he served with the U. S. Army in the European and South Pacific theaters. Mr. Moreland worked as a sales representative for the Continental Can Corporation where he serviced the southeastern United States. He was a member of Petrolia Lodge No. 363, F. & A. M. in Oil City, Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valleys of Oil City and Coundersport, Pa. and Syria Temple, A A. O. N. M. S. He was also a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 464 of Oil City. Mr. Moreland was an avid golfer and enjoyed big band music. He resided in Spraggs, Greene County since 2003. On December 29, 1948, he married Barbara A. Betz, who died August 3, 1992. Surviving are a son, James Clinton Moreland and his wife, Kelly of Meadville, Pa.; two daughters, Marjorie J. Swope and her husband, Chuck, of Spraggs and Mary Anne Vitunac and her husband, Eric, of Danville, Pa.; nine grandchildren, Hannah C. Swope, Alex Vitunac, David Vitunac, Jeffrey Vitunac, Heather Vitunac, Kerwin Moreland, Madelaine Moreland, Miles Moreland and Mary Kelly Moreland and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a brother, Harry C. Moreland, Jr. and a sister, Mary Moreland Steuart. Friends will be received from 4 to 8 P.M. on Tuesday in the Morrison Funeral Home, 110 Petroleum St., Oil City, Pa. where funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, June 18, 2008. Interment will follow at Grove Hill Cemetery, Oil City. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children – Erie, 1645 W. Eighth St., Erie, PA 16505.
