Kenneth M. Hartley, 83, of Carmichaels, Pa., died unexpectedly at 8:27 P.M. on Thursday, October 12, 2006 at Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg, Pa. He had been in declining health for the past six weeks. He was born October 22, 1922 in Rices Landing, Pa., a son of the late Morgan Lee and Flora Ruth Frost Hartley. Mr. Hartley was a 1941 graduate of Cumberland Township High School and resided in the Carmichaels area nearly all of his life. He worked at the LTV Nemacolin Mine as a surveyor party chief from 1953 until his retirement in 1982. In 1971, Mr. Hartley was instrumental in plotting the surface location for the underground seals to extinguish the fire at the Nemacolin Mine. He was a member of the Greene Valley Presbyterian Church of Carmichaels for over 50 years and served the office of Deacon. Mr. Hartley was a charter member and past president of the Carmichaels Lions Club and was honored in 1996 as Lion of the Year. He was a member of the Warrior Trails Association, served on the Carmichaels Borough Council and was an avid fan of the Carmichaels Area High School football team. Mr. Hartley was a devoted family man and especially enjoyed the company of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. On December 9, 1946, he married Dorothy A. King, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, David F. Hartley and his wife, Karen of Rices Landing and Frank D. Hartley and his wife, Maria of Latrobe, Pa.; two daughters, Mary M. Zimmerman and her husband, Blair of Waynesburg and Ruth A. Osborne and her husband, Gary of Carmichaels; 11 grandchildren, Shannon Smereczniak and her husband, Jeff, David J. Hartley and his wife, Jenn, Brian L. Zimmerman, Abby Z. Bilinsky and her husband, Jeff, Kevin B. Zimmerman, Joyce M. Edgar and her husband, Darrell, Jack K. Waggett, II, Jeffrey N. Waggett and his wife, Stephanie, Joseph L. Waggett, Sarah C. Hartley and Rebecca L. Hartley; five great grandchildren, Hannah, Justin, Jonathan, Dylan and A. J.; a brother, John R. Hartley and his wife, Dolores of Aliquippa, Pa.; a sister, Dorothy A. Cummins and her husband, Richard of Burgettstown, Pa. and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are two brothers, James O. Hartley and Ralph C. Hartley and a son-in-law, Jack K. Waggett. Family and friends are welcomed from 5 to 8 P.M. on Saturday and Noon to 8 P.M. on Sunday in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Martin J. Yoskovich, Funeral Director, 300 South Vine Street, Carmichaels. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, October 16, 2006 in the Greene Valley Presbyterian Church, 104 E. Greene St., Carmichaels, with the Rev. Harold O. Kelley officiating. Interment will follow at Greene County Memorial Park. Carmichaels Lions Club will conduct a memorial service at 6:00 P.M. on Sunday in the funeral home. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Organ Fund of Greene Valley Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 363, Carmichaels, PA 15320.
