Walter J. Johnston, 67, of Garards Fort, Pa., died at 10:45 A.M. on Sunday, June 10, 2007 at Southwest Regional Medical Center, Waynesburg, Pa. He was born September 23, 1939 in Indinola, Pa., a son of the late Frank and Julia (Wincek) Johnston. Mr. Johnston attended Mapletown High School and attended Penn State University for two years for mining engineering. He worked as an assistant mine foreman at the Shannopin and Nemacolin Mines and resided in Bobtown, Pa. before moving to Garards Fort in 1969. Mr. Johnston served in the U. S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Greene Valley Church of God in Crucible, Pa. and was attending Rolling Meadows Church of God in Waynesburg, Pa. Mr. Johnston was a lifetime member of the Bobtown Rod and Gun Club and was a member of the Greene County Sheriff's Association. He served for the past 30 years as a Greene Township Democratic Committeeman and served as a waterway patrolman for 10 years. Mr. Johnston enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and camping and was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. On October 3, 1958, he married Jean Moore, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, John W. Johnston and his wife, Cathie of Dilliner, Pa. and Steve M. Johnston and his wife, Jodi of Troy, Pa.; three daughters, Carol J. Johnston of Carmichaels, Michelle D. Hetrick and her husband, Kirk of Jefferson, Pa. and Chris B. Orr and her husband, Tracy of Muscatine, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, Chace Johnston, Rebecca, Jamie and John Johnston, Taylor and Erika Johnston, Gary Lynn Johnson, Nick Hetrick and his wife, Teresa, Kelly Hetrick, Justin and Markus Orr; two great grandchildren, Elijah Johnston and Daniel A. Hetrick; a brother, Ronald L. Johnston and his wife, Judy of Cleveland, Tenn.; two sisters, Doris Epperson and her husband, Don of Cleveland, Tenn. and Gloria Bonifilla and her husband, Bruce of Morgantown, W. Va. and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a son, Walter J. Johnston, Jr.; two brothers, Clayton Johnston and Richard Johnston and three sisters, Ann Corcoran, Betty Nazzar and Thresa Dill. Family and friends are welcomed from 7 to 9 P.M. on Tuesday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. on Wednesday in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Martin J. Yoskovich, Funeral Director, Carmichaels, Pa. where funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, June 14, 2007 with Pastor Gregory Stauffer officiating. Interment will follow at Garards Fort Cemetery.
