John Butch Smotzer

John "Butch" Smotzer, 64 of Carmichaels, Pa., died at 8:42 P.M. on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at the Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W. Va. He was born July 29, 1944 in Phoenixville, Pa., a son of the late John and Josephine (Luckay) Smotzer, Jr. Mr. Smotzer was a 1964 graduate of the Carmichaels Area High School and resided in the Carmichaels and Crucible, Pa. areas most of his life. In 1995, he retired from the Consolidated Coal Company Dilworth Mine. Mr. Smotzer served as a deacon at the Clarksville Christian Church and was a member of Dilworth Local 1980 of the United Mine Workers of America. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and cherished his family, especially his grandchildren. On July 19, 1977, he married Carol L. Mahovlich, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, John R. Ochkie and his wife, Martha of Carmichaels and Jeffrey A. Smotzer of Parma, Ohio; two daughters, JoAnn M. Cooper and her husband, William of Nemacolin, Pa. and Amanda L. Smotzer of Carmichaels; eight grandchildren, Ashley Cooper, Cassi Eddy, Taylore Ochkie, Mary Rose Smotzer, Joseph Adams, Jonathan Ochkie, Kyleigh Romito and Joshua Ochkie; a brother, Michael Smotzer and his wife, DeAnna of Waynesburg, Pa.; a sister, Amy Klomfas and her husband, Paul of Lakewood, Ohio; an uncle, Michael Smotzer and his wife, Henrietta of Springdale, Pa. and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Family and friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. on Friday in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, Pa. where the funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, November 22, 2008. Pastors Charles House and Domenick Sgro will officiate. Interment will follow at Laurel Point Cemetery, Carmichaels. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Clarksville Christian Church, P. O. Box 705, Clarksville, PA 15322.
