Melba Kramer Downey, 93 of Monrovia, Md. and formerly of Greensboro, Pa., died on Monday, January 19, 2009 at the Suburban Hospital, Bethesda, Md. She was born March 19, 1915 in Greensboro, a daughter of the late George R. and Bessie (Dilliner) Kramer. Mrs. Downey graduated from Mapletown high school in 1933. She attended Waynesburg College for two years and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Mrs. Downey also received a masters degree in education from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She was a teacher for more than 30 years teaching first for 10 years at Sugar Grove Elementary School in Greene County and then first grade for 20 years at Maryvale Elementary School in Rockville, Maryland. Her beloved husband, Frederick M. Downey is deceased. Surviving are two sons, Frederick M. Downey and his wife, Claudia of Fairfax, Va. and George K. Downey and his wife, Judy Miller of Cabin John, Md.; a daughter, Vera Viehmann of Monrovia; five grandchildren, Dawn Harvey, Kelly Emery, Bryce Downey, Kristina Talley and Alex Viehmann; six great grandchildren, Peyton, Ryan, Sean, Brandon, Luke and Ian. Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 P.M. on Thursday, January 22, 2009 at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville, Blvd., Mt. Airy, Md. Family and friends are welcome to attend the funeral service at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 24, 2009 at the Greensboro Presbyterian Church, Greensboro, Pa. The Rev. Dr. Robert M. Randolph will officiate. Interment will follow at Greene County Memorial Park, Waynesburg, Pa. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Greensboro Presbyterian Church, c/o Thomas J. Flynn, 1733 S. Eighty Eight Rd., Greensboro, PA 15338.
