Donald L. Smith

Donald Leo Smith, 90 of Carmichaels, Pa., passed away at 12:30 A.M. on Friday, January 30, 2009, in the Golden Living Rehabilitation Center, Waynesburg, Pa. He was born September 23, 1918, in Waltersburg, Pa., a son of the late Oliver Wendell and Leola M. (Franks) Smith. Donald served in the U. S. Navy with the Seabees during World War II in the Pacific. He was injured by an explosion on his ship and was honorably discharged. After leaving the Navy, Donald was self-employed as a carpenter and brick layer up until his marriage to Ruth E. Hoch on June 17, 1947. He was than hired at the U. S. Steel Robena Mine and retired in 1980 as a face boss from the U. S. Steel Maple Creek Mine after working for the Company for 33 years. Donald resided in Carmichaels all of his married life where he was a member of the Carmichaels and Cumberland Township Volunteer Fire Company since April 15, 1960, a member of the Greene County Firemen's Association and the Western Pennsylvania Firemen's Association. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting and the outdoors and was proud of his service to his community. Donald spent his retirement with his wife Ruth traveling the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, across Canada, Mexico, as well as traveling the world including Africa, Australia, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Europe and the Pacific Islands. Surviving in addition to his wife of 61 years, Ruth E. (Hoch) Smith, are a son Randy Von Smith and his wife, Beverly of Hancock, Maine; a daughter Denise R. Kauffman and her husband, Scott of Chino Valley, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Randi Bustamante and her husband, Toribio of Arizona and Aubrey Adam Smith of Maine; a great granddaughter, Julia Bustamante; a step granddaughter, Melody Smith of New York; a brother Clayton Smith and his wife, Mary Ann of Uniontown, Pa.; three sisters, Sara Miller and Violet Schultz, both of Cleveland, Ohio and Twilla Dawn Shissler of Hershey, Pa. and several nieces and nephews. Donald was the fifth child of his nine siblings. Family and friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P. M. on Thursday in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, Pa. where the funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, February 6, 2009. The Rev. Harold O. Kelley will officiate. Entombment will follow at the mausoleum at Sylvan Height Cemetery, Uniontown, Pa. The Carmichaels and Cumberland Township Volunteer Fire Company will conduct a memorial service at 7:00 P.M. on Thursday in the funeral home. Cumberland American Legion Post 400 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491 will accord military honors at the graveside. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Carmichaels and Cumberland Township Volunteer Fire Company, P. O. Box 123, Carmichaels, PA 15320.
