Kenneth W. Christopher, 92 of Carmichaels, Pa., died at 12:10 P.M. on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at the Washington Hospital, Washington, Pa. He was born March 17, 1917 in Khedive, Cumberland Township, Greene County, Pa., a son of the late Charles H. and Sylvia Pearl (Ewart) Christopher. Mr. Christopher was a 1936 graduate of Cumberland Township High School and attended Penn Commercial until 1940. During World War II, he served with the U. S. Army Air Corps for over four years. After World War II, he was employed by J. Claude Smith Plumbing and Heating, Aklin Lumber Company, Keystone Auto and Transit Company and in 1984, retired from the First National Bank of Carmichaels (now Community Bank, N. A.). Mr. Christopher was a charter member of the Carmichaels Lions Club and a member of Cumberland American Legion Post 400. He served as treasurer and trustee for the Greene Valley Presbyterian Church of Carmichaels and as financial secretary for the Nemacolin Citizens Club for 17 years. From 1963 until his passing, Mr. Christopher served as secretary treasurer for the Municipal Authority of the Borough of Carmichaels. On November 11, 1944, he married Della Patterson, who died January 19, 2001. Surviving are his step son, Joel Gunnels of Park City, Kans.; two grandchildren, Gretchen Brown of Tulsa, Okla. and Joelle Lehman of Hays, Kans.; 10 great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; six nieces and nephews, Chuck Christopher of Carmichaels, Keith Christopher and his wife, Cathy of Lovettsville, Va., Eileen Lapkowicz and her husband, Joe of Carmichaels, Kenny Christopher and his wife, Tammy of Carmichaels, Sharon Sitter and her husband, Gary of Erie, Pa. and Christine Ferencak and her husband, Greg of Jefferson, Pa. and several great nieces and nephews. Deceased are two brothers, Albert Vernon Christopher, who died in infancy and Clarence D. Christopher and a sister, Ila Moredock. Family and friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. on Friday in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, Pa. where the funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 13, 2009. The Rev. P. Keith Larson and the Rev. Harold O. Kelley will officiate. Interment will follow at Muddy Creek Cemetery, Jefferson Township, Greene County, Pa. Cumberland American Legion Post 400 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491 will accord military honors at the graveside. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Memorial Fund at the Greene Valley Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 363, Carmichaels, PA 15320.
