Walter A. Danforth, 89 of Carmichaels, Pa., died at 6:15 A.M. on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at the Washington County Health Center, Washington, Pa. after a lengthy illness. He was born February 10, 1920 in Rices Landing, Pa., a son of the late Walter R. and Ellen (Neel) Danforth. Mr. Danforth was a graduate of Cumberland Township High School in Carmichaels and served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. After the war, he worked for a short time for the Crucible Fuel Company mine and then worked most of his life on tow boats on the Monongahela River. Mr. Danforth retired from Mon River Towing. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Carmichaels and Cumberland American Legion Post 400 and was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491, Carmichaels. Mr. Danforth enjoyed gardening and nature. On July 19, 1946, he married Gladys A. Cales, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Mark A. Danforth of Crucible, Pa.; three grandchildren, Theresa M. Maskil and her husband, Walter, Clinton J. Danforth and his wife, Rhonda and Jeffrey Danforth and his companion, Patty; four sisters, Bernice Barnhart and her husband, Barry of New Stanton, Pa., Ellen "Corky" Carpenter of Waynesburg, Pa., Mary "Booty" Herilla and Judy Burkhart, both of Springdale, Pa. and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a son, Dennis "Denny" J. Danforth; two brothers, William Danforth and John Danforth and a sister, Tillie Neal. Family and friends are welcome from 11:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M., the hour of service on Saturday, October 24, 2009 in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, Pa. The Rev. Bruce R. Judy will officiate. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491 and Cumberland American Legion Post 400 will accord military honors at the conclusion of the funeral service in the funeral home. Private interment will follow at Laurel Point Cemetery, Carmichaels.
