Andrew Bystry, Sr., 83 of Carmichaels, Pa., died at 11:20 P.M. on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 in his home following his courageous battle with cancer. He was born May 30, 1926 in Crucible, Pa., a son of the late Mike and Katie (Novak) Bystry. Mr. Bystry was a 1944 graduate of Cumberland Township High School in Carmichaels and resided in Cumberland Township all of his life. He served with the U. S. Navy during World War II and with the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict. From 1947 until 1957, Mr. Bystry worked at the Crucible Fuel Company Mine and then became a deputy sheriff in Greene County in 1961. In 1980, he became warden of the Greene County Prison, where he worked until his retirement in 1991. Mr. Bystry was a member of St. Hugh Roman Catholic Church, Carmichaels, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 819 of Carmichaels, the Mount Morris Sportsmen's Club, A. A. R. P. , the Crucible Slavonic Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6303, Greensboro, Pa. Until his recent illness, he served as the firing squad commander for the Cumberland American Legion Post 400 Honor Guard. Mr. Bystry was a past president of the Carmichaels Lions Club and was honored as the Lion of the Year. On November 27, 1948, he married Mary Frances "Beansie" Roller, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Andrew Bystry, Jr. and his wife, Pam of Aliquippa, Pa. and David Bystry of Mentor, Ohio; a daughter, Patricia A. Plummer of Greensboro, Pa.; eight grandchildren, Christopher Plummer, Thomas Plummer, Stacy Bystry, Jason Bystry, Michael Bystry, Matthew Bystry, Marc Bystry and Mitchell Bystry; three great grandchildren, Gianna Sophia Bystry, Dominic Andrew Plummer and Carson Alexander Bystry; three sisters, Katherine Richards and her husband, Dave of Cleveland, Ohio, Bertha Becar of Wickliffe, Ohio and Loretta Duca and her husband, Jay of Lyndhurst, Ohio and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a brother, Peter Bystry; three sisters, Ann Hathaway, Helen Mancuso and Margaret Lubich and a daughter-in-law, Pamela G. Bystry. Family and friends are welcome from 5 to 9 P.M. on Friday in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, Pa. where a blessing service will be held at 9:00 A.M. on Saturday, May 29, 2010, followed by a Mass of the Resurrection at 9:30 A.M. at St. Hugh Roman Catholic Church, 408 Route 88, Carmichaels with the Rev. John M. Bauer as celebrant. Interment will follow at Greene County Memorial Park with full military honors accorded by Cumberland American Legion Post 400 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491 and Post 6303. A vigil service will be held at 7:00 P.M. on Friday in the funeral home followed at 7:30 P.M. by a memorial service by the Carmichaels Lions Club.
