George Messich

August 24, 1926 — July 5, 2010

George Messich, 83 of Greensboro, Pa., was called home to be with his Lord and Savior at 8:10 P.M. on Monday, July 5, 2010 surrounded by his loving family in his home after a short illness. He was born August 24, 1926 in Nemacolin, Pa., a son of the late Steve and Julia (Przyhocki) Messich. Mr. Messich served with the U. S. Navy on board the USS Little Rock from December 22, 1944 until his discharge on April 3, 1946. In his earlier years, Mr. Messich very much enjoyed bowling. He also played baseball for many years in the Big Ten. His hobbies included hunting and fishing for the past 62 years at his cabins in Elk County, Pa. while watching over his younger friends. He was an avid football fan and supporter of the Mapletown Maples. Mr. Messich was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6303 and retired from the Duquesne Light Warwick mine in 1988 after working at the mine for 44 years. Mr. Messich will be dearly missed by his family and friends. He had a great love for the Lord and the Blessed Virgin Mary and was a lifelong member of the Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Greensboro. On July 1, 1948, he married his best friend and soul mate, Mary Jane Truhan, who survives. The couple was married at St. Hubert Roman Catholic Church, Point Marion, Pa. Also surviving are two loving children, Kathy Ridella and her husband, Jim of Johnstown, Pa. and George Messich and his wife, Linda of Greensboro; his dearly loved grandsons, Pete, Jimmy, Matt and Mark; step grandsons, Eric Gapen and Mark Gapen and his wife, Heather; step great grandchildren, Katie and David; brothers, Paul Messich and his wife, Francie of Cheswick, Pa. and Andrew Messich of Pymatuning, Pa.; a sister, Rose Ann Gearing and her husband, George of Parma, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Liz Messich of Parma; a special aunt, Helen Sokol of Nemacolin, Pa. and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Deceased is a brother, Steve Messich and longtime close friends, Steve and Edith Billetz. Family and friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. on Thursday in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, Pa. where a blessing service will be held at 10:15 A.M. on Friday, July 9, 2010, followed by a Mass of the Resurrection at 11:00 A.M. at the Holy Family Worship Site of the St. Ignatius of Antioch Parish, Greensboro with the Rev. Lawrence V. Holpp as celebrant. Interment will follow at Monongahela Hill Cemetery, Mapletown, Pa. A vigil service will be held at 3:30 P.M. on Thursday in the funeral home.
