William L. Shaffer, 83 of Rices Landing, Pa. died Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at the Golden Living Center, Waynesburg, Pa. following a brief illness. He was born March 15, 1927 in Confluence, Pa. a son of the late Grata Raymond and Beatrice Mary (Lenhardt) Shaffer. Mr. Shaffer was a graduate of Jefferson Morgan High School, where he was an outstanding athlete. While attending Waynesburg College, he set several school records as a football player. He played professional Baseball for the New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates in the late 1940's. Mr. Shaffer later worked for the Eaton Corporation as a Machine Operator. He was a veteran of the US Army having served during WW II and a member of the Brooks-Crago American Legion Post 816 of Rices Landing. On November 7, 1948 he married Ruth B. Shaffer who died December 2, 1999. Surviving are two sons, William A. Shaffer and his wife Elizabeth of Louisville, Colo. and Gary L. Shaffer of Tempe, Ariz.; two grandchildren (sons of Willam A.): William A. E. Shaffer and Andrew D. B. Shaffer; one brother Donald R. Shaffer and his wife Wilma of Mentor, Ohio. Deceased in addition to his wife is a sister, Inez Callahan. Funeral Services are private and under the direction of Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, Pa. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to American Legion Post 816, P.O. Box 25, Rices Landing, Pa. 15357
