Dale M. Hockenberry

October 16, 1915 — February 26, 2011

Dale M. Hockenberry, 95 of Nemacolin, Pa., went to be with his Lord at 9:35 P.M. on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg, Pa. He was born October 16, 1915 in Graceton, Indiana County, Pa., a son of the late John Clyde and Edna Grace (Clawson) Hockenberry. Mr. Hockenberry and his family moved to Nemacolin in 1928 and he graduated in 1934 from Cumberland Township High School, Carmichaels, Pa. He served with the U. S. Army during World War II and worked at the Nemacolin Mine until his retirement in 1979. Mr. Hockenberry was actively involved in the formation and the building of the former Nemacolin Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder. He continued his membership at the Greene Valley Presbyterian Church in Carmichaels where he also served as an elder. Mr. Hockenberry volunteered as a scoutmaster in Nemacolin for several years and was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers fan. He was honored as Granger of the Year of Carmichaels Grange No. 1389 and was a member and "the official joke teller" of the Carmichaels Lions Club. Mr. Hockenberry was honored as Lion of the Year in 2004. Mr. Hockenberry enjoyed history and photography and wrote a fictional historical play centered in southwestern Pennsylvania during the late 1700's. On January 20, 1946, he married the former Sue Carolyn Newsome of Cordele, Georgia. The couple celebrated 65 years of marriage this year. For the past two years, the couple resided together at Rolling Meadows Nursing Home. Dale will be remembered mostly for his love and devotion to his family. Surviving are a son, David J. Hockenberry and his wife, Jean, of Carmichaels; two daughters, Marian C. Fiedor of Carmichaels and Susan G. Brioli and her husband, Richard, of Masontown, Pa.; three grandchildren, Kristina Pallozzi and her husband, Jeff, of Parkesburg, Pa., Richard R. "Richie" Brioli of Masontown and Rachel R. Hockenberry of Allentown, Pa.; two great grandsons, Brice A. Pallozzi and Jayden M. Kerley; a cousin, Virginia Holmes of Indiana County, Pa. and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a brother, John C. Hockenberry, Jr. and a sister, Dorothy Capuzzi. Family and friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 P.M. on Tuesday in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, Pa. where the funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, March 2, 2011. The Rev. P. Keith Larson will officiate. Entombment will follow at the mausoleum at Greene County Memorial Park with military honors accorded by Filer-Sadlek American Legion Post 954. Carmichaels Lions Club will conduct a memorial service at 6:00 P.M. on Tuesday in the funeral home, followed at 6:30 P.M. by a memorial service by Carmichaels Grange No. 1389. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the memorial fund at the Greene Valley Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 363, Carmichaels, PA 15320.
