Anthony J. Zabroski, 88, of Greensboro, Pa, (Cabbage Flats), died peacefully on Monday, July 4, 2011 in the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center, Wilmington, N. C. He was born February 22,1923 in Greensboro, son of Louis and Antonina (Bem) Zabroski. Mr. Zabroski graduated from Mapletown High School in 1940. During World War II, he served as a B-17 Bomber Commander with the 15th Air Force, 301st Bomb Group, 419th Bombardment Squadron based in Foggia, Italy. On February 1, 1945, he was shot down over enemy territory, was captured and became a German prisoner of war until the war ended in Europe. During the Korean War he served three years in Tokyo, Japan as a traffic controller at the Tokyo Air Traffic Control Center. Afterwards, he was assigned to flying VIP's throughout the world. He was most proud that George C. Marshall, U. S. Chief of Staff during World War II, requested him as his personal pilot. After leaving the Air Force in October of 1953, Mr. Zabroski returned to civilian life to build a career as an Eastern Airlines captain based in Washington, D. C. He flew DC 9's and DC 10's out of Reagan International Airport while residing and raising his family in Fairfax, Va. During his flying career he amassed a total of 27,000 logged flight hours. Mr. Zabroski was Catholic and an avid golfer prior to his bout with esophageal cancer in 1977. His wife, Dolores A. (Miller) Zabroski, whom he married on May 1, 1948, died July 11, 1987. Mr. Anthony J. Zabroski is survived by two daughters, Patricia L. Goode and husband, Gary, of Wilmington, N. C. and Debra F. Zabroski of Rices Landing, Pa; a son, Anthony J. Lewis and wife, Martha, of Woodbridge, Va.; four grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; a sister, Rosalie Genduso and husband, Frank P., of Melbourne Beach, Fla. and seven nieces and nephews. His grandson, Anthony J. Lewis, Jr., died June 7, 1988 and his sister, Agnes Beall, passed away June 7, 1998. Anthony Zabroski, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and uncle, was deeply loved and will be kept in our hearts forever. Family and friends are welcome from 7 to 9 P.M. on Friday and 9 to 10 A.M., the hour of a blessing service on Saturday, July 9, 2011 in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, Pa. The Rev. John M. Bauer will officiate. Interment will follow at Greene County Memorial Park, Waynesburg, Pa. with military honors accorded by the U. S. Air Force, Cumberland American Legion Post 400 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491.
