Stephen J. Vargo, 93, of Beaver, Pa. and formerly of Carmichaels, Pa., died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, September 13, 2011 at Heritage Valley Beaver. He was born December 24, 1917 in Arnold, Pa., a son of the late John and Suzanna (Zeman) Vargo. Mr. Vargo was a graduate of Cumberland Township High School and served with the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He worked at the Nemacolin, Pa. Mine until his retirement in 1982 where he was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local 6290. While residing in Carmichaels, Mr. Vargo was a member of the St. Hugh Roman Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing and gardening and cherished his family, especially his granddaughter, Sofia. On July 9, 1949, he married Mary Elizabeth Kozel, who died December 13, 1999. Surviving are a son, Stephen J. Vargo and his wife, Poly, with whom he made his home in Beaver; a granddaughter, Sofia Elizabeth Vargo; a sister-in-law, Barbara Karpoich of the State of New York and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a brother, Andrew Vargo and four sisters, Mary Lorinchack, Susan Cunningham, Sophie Vargo and Ann Carney. Family and friends are welcome from 4 to 8 P.M. on Friday in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, Pa. where a blessing service will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Saturday, September 17, 2011, followed at 2:00 P. M. by a Mass of the Resurrection at St. Hugh Roman Catholic Church, Carmichaels, Pa. with the Rev. John M. Bauer as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Leckrone, Pa. Cumberland American Legion Post 400 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491 will accord military honors at the graveside.
