Sue Carolyn Hockenberry

Sue Carolyn Hockenberry, 87, of Nemacolin, Pa., went to be with the Lord at 10:40 A. M. on Friday, October 28, 2011 at Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg, Pa. She was born August 18, 1924 on her family farm near Cordele, Ga., a daughter of the late A. B. and Mary (Moreland) Newsome. Mrs. Hockenberry was a 1941 graduate of East Crisp High School in Cordele. On her eighteenth birthday during World War II, she began working at the Naval Ordinance Plant in Macon, Ga. making ammunition for the war effort. While residing in Macon, she also worked as a hostess at the local U. S. O. where she met her husband-to-be, Sergeant Dale M. Hockenberry, of Nemacolin. After World War II, Carolyn was employed by the Macon Telegraph and News newspaper. On January 20, 1946, she and Dale were married in the Mulberry Methodist Church in Macon. Afterward, they made their home in Nemacolin where they raised three children. Mrs. Hockenberry was active in the Nemacolin Presbyterian Church. She led the local 4-H Club and served as a Cub Scout Den Mother. After raising her family, Mrs. Hockenberry attended the Greene County Vocational Technical School where she became a licensed practical nurse in 1972. She performed private duty nursing for several years. Later, Mrs. Hockenberry served in many offices of the Carmichaels Women's Civic Club where she was presently an honorary member. For many years, she served as Lecturer of the Carmichaels Grange No. 1389, and in 1995 was honored as Granger of the Year. Mrs. Hockenberry was currently a member of the Greene Valley Presbyterian Church of Carmichaels. After celebrating 65 years of marriage, Dale passed away on February 26, 2011. Surviving are two daughters, Marian C. Fiedor of Carmichaels and Susan Brioli and her husband, Richard, of Masontown, Pa.; a son, David J. Hockenberry and his wife, Jean, of Carmichaels; three grandchildren, Kristina Pallozzi and her husband, Jeff, of Parkesburg, Pa., Richard "Richie" Brioli of Uniontown, Pa. and Rachel R. Hockenberry of Allentown, Pa.; two great grandchildren, Brice Pallozzi and Jayden M. Kerley; two brothers, Joe B. Newsome of Fayetteville, Ga. and Alec E. Newsome and his wife, Helen, of Cordele, Ga. and many nieces and nephews. Deceased are a brother, Jelks P. Newsome and two sisters, Martha Duval Newsome, who died in childhood, and Harriet Newsome Morris. Mrs. Hockenberry has been a very positive influence to her family, her community and her church. Her family has always been very proud of her for the values she held and instilled upon her family and those that knew her. A loving mother and grandmother, she will long be remembered for her sweet and gentle spirit. Family and friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 6:30 to 9 P.M. on Tuesday in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, Pa., where the funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, November 2, 2011. The Rev. P. Keith Larson will officiate. Entombment will follow at the mausoleum at Greene County Memorial Park, Waynesburg, Pa. Carmichaels Grange No. 1389 will conduct a memorial service at 6:30 P. M. on Tuesday in the funeral home. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the memorial fund of the Greene Valley Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 363, Carmichaels, PA 15320.
