Daniel R. Bierer, Jr., 88, of Greensboro, Pa., died at 11:15 A.M. on Thursday, July 19, 2012 in his home. He was born July 5, 1924 in Waltersburg, Pa., a son of the late Daniel Raymond Bierer, Sr. and Blanche (Cooper) Bierer Lowery. Mr. Bierer served with the rank of first sergeant with C Company of the 1256 Combat Engineers Battalion in the U. S. Army in central Europe during World War II. He worked for many years as a dispatcher at the Shannopin Mine in Bobtown, Pa. where he also worked as a shift foreman, fire and safety inspector and a trained paramedic. Mr. Bierer also worked for a short time for the Ford Motor Company in Cleveland, Ohio and was a salesman of Studebakers in Waynesburg, Pa. He retired as construction foreman in 1985 from the U. S. Steel Cumberland Mine in Kirby, Pa. Mr. Bierer was an avid fisherman and enjoyed restoring Studebaker and Dodge cars. He served as commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5567, Bobtown, Pa. from 1954 to 1956 and coached little league from 1961 until 1964 at Mon-View Park, Greensboro. Mr. Bierer was a devoted family man and was the father figure to his granddaughters and great grandchildren. On August 22, 1942, he married Freda A. Herrington, who died April 15, 1992. Surviving are a daughter, Diana L. Bierer, at home; five grandchildren, Kimberly Mitchell, Jenny Mitchell, Libby Mitchell, Lisa Bierer Garber (John) and Lynn Bierer Zalar (Grant); 13 great grandchildren, Claire Abi Nader, Caden Mitchell, Ava Freed, Dominic Freed, Griffin Freed, Andie Robinson, Hayley Sawyer, Layla Sawyer, Zach Zalar, Paige Zalar, Kirsten Garber, Claire Garber and Lucas Garber; a great great grandson, C. J. Calais; a sister, Valetta R. Cousins, at home; a daughter-in-law, Karen Bierer King, of Waynesburg; his cherished and beloved sister-in-law, Mary Maple of Waynesburg and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a son, Daniel R. Bierer, III; a brother, Robert Bierer and a sister, Nelda Yoppi.
