Clifford Sweeney

Clifford Sweeney, 91, of Greensboro, Pa., died unexpectedly at 8:25 P.M. on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at the Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W. Va. He was born June 10, 1922 in Nemacolin, Pa., a son of the late Sylvester and Mae (Scrowthers) Sweeney. Mr. Sweeney was a graduate of Mapletown High School and resided in Greensboro most of his life where he was a member of the Mapletown United Methodist Church. On May 2, 1945, he married Glenda H. Pringle, who passed away on August 13, 2013. The couple was married for 68 years. Mr. Sweeney retired from the Duquesne Light Warwick Mine where he taught electrical engineering. He was talented in building machines and had rebuilt equipment for Hunting Hills in Dilliner, Pa. and the Fayette County Gun Club. For many years, he competed in trap shooting competitions and enjoyed reloading his ammunition as long as his health permitted. Mr. Sweeney and his late wife, Glenda, also played on area bowling leagues. He served in the U. S. Navy and with the Greensboro-Monongahela Township Volunteer Fire Company where he served as fire chief. Mr. Sweeney was a member of Valley Lodge No. 459, F. & A. M., Masontown, Pa., Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Pittsburgh and Syria Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S. Surviving are a nephew, James I. Sweeney of Greensboro and his brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Rose Pringle of Greensboro and several nieces and nephews. Deceased is a brother, Robert E. Sweeney, Sr. and a sister, Gertrude McLaughlin. Family and friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. on Sunday in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, Pa. where the funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, April 28, 2014. The Rev. Bruce R. Judy will officiate. Entombment will follow at Greene County Memorial Park. Valley Lodge No. 459, F. & A. M. will conduct Masonic Services at 7:00 P. M. on Sunday in the funeral home. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607.
