Dolores Jean Shaffer, 82, of Charlotte, N. C. and formerly of Carmichaels, Pa., went home to her heavenly Father on Saturday, May 10, 2014. Born in Mount Pleasant, Pa. in 1931, "Dee" was a daughter of the late Ira William and Anna "Grace" (Kalp) Whipkey. She resided in Carmichaels for most of her childhood. Mrs. Shaffer attended Waynesburg College and then Penn State University, finishing with her master's degree in elementary education. She married Paul Francis Shaffer, a CPA, in July of 1960 and lived in Plum Boro, Pa. They moved to Penn Hills, Pa. and started Wendy's Nursery and Kindergarten school on Rodi Road where Dee was both teacher and principal. Upon retiring from teaching in her 40's, Dee went on to tutor children, teaching English as a second language until the last year of her life. In 2004, after the death of her husband in 2003, she left Pennsylvania and moved to Charlotte where her son and granddaughter resided. A committed Christian all of her life, Mrs. Shaffer became a member of the University City United Methodist Church in Charlotte. She will be sadly missed by her daughter, Beth Ann Shaffer-Wise of Ohio; a son, Paul Robert of North Carolina; five grandchildren, Sheyli Smith, Natalie King, Harmony and Billy Wise and Megan Shaffer; three great grandchildren; three brothers, Bill Whipkey of Carmichaels, Don Whipkey of Waynesburg, Pa. and Bob Whipkey of Charleston, W. Va. and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, "Bets" Whipkey-Jamison. Family and friends are welcome from 10:00 A. M. until 12:00 Noon on Saturday, May 17, 2014 in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, Pa. A graveside service will follow at 3:00 P.M. on Saturday at Donegal Cemetery, Donegal, Pa. The Rev. Bruce R. Judy will officiate.
