Luther M. Day, 87, of Carmichaels, Pa., died at 9:54 A.M. on Sunday, June 8, 2014 at Rolling Meadows Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Waynesburg, Pa. He was born August 30, 1926 in Jefferson, Pa., a son of the late Luther and Pearl (Zimmerman) Day. Mr. Day served with the U. S. Navy and the Seabees during World War II in the Pacific Theater including Okinawa. He was employed for a number of years at the Nemacolin Mine until his retirement in 1985. Mr. Day was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491 and Cumberland American Legion Post 400, all in Carmichaels and the United Mine Workers of American Nemacolin Local 6290. He cherished his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Surviving are his wife, Margaret (Holupka) Day; a daughter, Cheryl Gallentine and her husband, William, of Carmichaels; two daughters-in-law, Sharon Day of Richmond, Va. and Dianne Leppert of Claysville, Pa.; 10 grandchildren, Roger Day of Glenn Allen, Va., Lisa Wood of Powhatan, Va., Tracey Ottena of Clarksville, Pa., Jacqueline Day of Finleyville, Pa., Candace Kramarz of Pittsburgh, Pa., Dr. William Gallentine of Cary, N. C., Dr. Heath Gallentine of Lexington, Ky., Chad Gallentine of Rices Landing, Pa., Dr. Garrett Gallentine of Loveland, Ohio and Ethan Gallentine of Durham, N. C.; nine great grandchildren; five nephews, Robert Kocielek of Cleveland, Ohio, Mike Holupka of Prince William, Va., James Miller of Carmichaels, Barry Miller of New Castle, Pa. and Gary Barnhart of Cary, N. C. and a niece, Leah McKenzie of Carmichaels and his best friend, Robert Decker of Carmichaels. Deceased are two sons, Roger Day and Ronald Day; two sisters, Betty Miller and Ruth Barnhart and his step father, James Carter Barr. Family and friends are welcome to celebrate his life and visit the family from 10:00 A. M. to 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 14, 2014 in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, Pa., when a memorial service will follow at 11:00 A.M. The Rev. Bruce R. Judy will officiate. The Carmichaels Honor Guard and the U. S. Navy will accord military honors at the graveside at Greene County Memorial Park following the memorial service. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to either Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491, 500 W. George St., Carmichaels, PA 15320 or to Cumberland American Legion Post 400, 205 E. George St., Carmichaels, PA 15320.
