Elizabeth "Betty" Longo, 88, of Greensboro, Pa., died at 8:45 A.M. on July 26, 2014, at Strabane Woods of Washington, Washington, Pa. She was born September 26, 1925, in Beatty, Pa., a daughter of the late Andrew and Elizabeth (Onusko) Popernack. Her family moved to Bobtown in 1929. Mrs. Longo was a 1943 graduate of Point Marion High School and attended Detroit Business Institute. While in Detroit she worked for General Motors Diesel Division in the Engineering Department for four years during World War II. On June 25, 1949, she married James J. Longo and moved to Greensboro, Pa. The couple owned and operated the J. J. Longo Confectionary from 1953 until 2011 while residing in the A. V. Boughner home next to the store on Front Street. Mr. Longo died January 3, 2000. Throughout her life, Mrs. Longo was very active in community affairs and served on the Greensboro-Monongahela Township Sewer Authority since its foundation and as secretary-treasurer until her retirement. She also served on the Mon View Park Board of Directors at its founding and was a founding member of the former Holy Family Catholic Church in Greensboro. In addition, Mrs. Longo was a member of the Nathanael Greene Historical Foundation and the Greensboro Long Range Planning Committee. Surviving are a son, John A. Longo of Greensboro; two daughters, Nancy J. Sill and her husband, David, of Pasadena, Md., and Roberta A. Ravey and her husband, Thomas, of Allison Park, Pa.; two grandchildren, Benjamin Michael Sill and Katherine Elizabeth Sill; two brothers, Paul Popernack and his wife, Margie, of Bobtown, and Robert Popernack and his wife, Anna Marie, of Bay Village, Ohio; a sister, Mary Ann Kurila and her husband, Edward, of Mayfield Heights, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews. Deceased in addition to her parents and husband are two brothers, Andrew Popernack and Thomas Popernack, and a sister, Margaret Franks. Family and friends are welcome from 7 to 9 P.M. on Monday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. on Tuesday in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, Pa., where a blessing service will be held at 10:15 A.M. on Wednesday, July 30, 2014, followed at 11:00 A. M. by a Mass of the Resurrection at St. Ignatius of Antioch Catholic Church, Bobtown, Pa., with the Rev. Lawrence V. Holpp as celebrant. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Point Marion, Pa. A parish vigil service will be held at 7:30 P. M. on Monday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest that memorial contributions be made to either Amedisys Hospice, 275 Meadowlands Blvd., Washington, PA 15301 or to the Nathanael Greene Historical Foundation, P. O. Box 534, Greensboro, PA 15338.
