Thomas Stofcheck, 86, of Carmichaels, Pa., died at 7:55 P.M. on Thursday, April 9, 2015 at the Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W. Va. He was born November 24, 1928 in Redstone Township, Fayette County, Pa., a son of the late Steve and Mary (Kissel) Stofcheck. Mr. Stofcheck was a 1946 graduate of Cumberland Township High School in Carmichaels and resided in Carmichaels most of his life. He served with the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict and upon returning home began working at the U. S. Steel Robena Mine. Mr. Stofcheck retired from the U. S. Steel Maplecreek Mine in 1994. He was a member of United Mine Workers of America Local 1248 at Maplecreek, served on the health and safety committee at Maplecreek and was active with the District 4 Compac. Mr. Stofcheck was very proud of his local promotion of Richard Trumka, the current president of the AFL-CIO. In addition to working as a miner, he worked as the manager at Bryan Dairy in Waynesburg, Pa. from 1962 until 1972. Mr. Stofcheck was a member of the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Carmichaels where he served as a greeter, treasurer, president of the church council and a member of the church choir. In addition, he was a former little league coach in Mapletown, Pa. and a first aid instructor for the local Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Stofcheck cherished his family and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. On February 17, 1955, he married Georgia Ann Vowcheck, who died March 27, 2010. Surviving are three sons, Thomas Stephen Stofcheck and his wife, Diana, of Carmichaels, Robert Edward Stofcheck of Waynesburg, Pa. and David George Stofcheck and his wife, Christine, of Clarksville, Pa.; a daughter, Deborah Ann Christensen Everly and her husband, William, of Carmichaels; four grandchildren, Courtney Anne Stofcheck, Samantha Ann Christensen, Jakob Kenneth Nyswaner and Noah Domenick Thomas Stofcheck; a brother, Edward Stofcheck and his wife, Barbara, of Larue, Ohio; a sister, Betty Krutko and her husband, Paul, of Strongsville, Ohio; his former son-in-law, Steven Christensen of Carmichaels and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are two brothers, Rev. Stephen Stofcheck and his wife, Mary Jane, and Robert Stofcheck and his wife, Betty. Family and friends are welcomed from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday and in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, Pa. and from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A. M., the hour of services, on Monday, April 13, 2015 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Carmichaels with the Rev. Rebecca Dittenhafer officiating. Interment will follow at Greene County Memorial Park with military honors accorded by the Carmichaels Honor Guard. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 224 South Market Street, Carmichaels, PA 15320.
