James C. Humbert, Jr., 87, of Greensboro, Pa., died at 2:50 A.M. on Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at the Golden LivingCenter, Waynesburg, Pa. He was born July 22, 1928 in Redstone Township, Fayette County, Pa., a son of the late James Calvin and Vera Anna (Bock) Humbert. Mr. Humbert served with the U. S. Army during and after World War II with the 9th Infantry Division, the 1st Infantry Division (also known as "The Big Red 1") and the United States Constabulary in the European Theater. Upon arriving at the Army base in Starnberg, Germany, he became the 5,000th soldier to register. Subsequently, the City of Starnberg provided him with a bronze key to the city and honored him as "king for the week". It was during his service in Starnberg that he learned to play golf.
Mr. Humbert worked for the United States Steel Corporation as a refrigeration mechanic for 10 years. In 1960, he moved to the Washington, D. C. area and worked for the Potomac Electric Power Company. Mr. Humbert also worked part time as a licensed tourist guide in Washington. Later, he began working for the Xerox Corporation as a technician servicing the Maryland Metropolitan area until being transferred to Rochester, N. Y. Mr. Humbert first retired in 1989 and then returned to Xerox as an instructor for another five years at the Xerox Document University at Leesburg, Va. He then returned to Greene County, Pennsylvania and serviced Xerox equipment for a few more years until his "real" retirement at the age of 72.
Mr. Humbert was a member of the Mapletown United Methodist Church. He was a past president of the Carmichaels Lions Club and was a member of Carmichaels Grange No. 1389. Mr. Humbert represented the Lions Club for the King Coal Association and was a Past Master of Valley Lodge No. 459, F. & A. M. in Masontown, Pa. and a member of the Uniontown Lodge of Perfection. In addition, he was a member of Cumberland American Legion Post 400, a former member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6303 in Greensboro and a member of the United States Constabulary Association of America.
Mr. Humbert enjoyed square dancing and traveling to many places including Europe. He was known for his devotion to his family and his patience with everyone. On September 30, 1950, he married Gert Jamison, who died December 4, 2007.
Surviving are a daughter, Tina L. Humbert (Tommy) of Greensboro; three grandchildren, Brianna Humbert, Jessica Holloway (Jonathan) and Michael Holloway (Chelsey); five great grandchildren, Scylar Humbert, Chloe Holloway, Michael Holloway, Reagan Holloway and Jocelyn Holloway; three brothers, William C. Humbert and his wife, Wilda, and Donald D. Humbert and his wife, Kay, all of Greensboro and Richard A. Humbert and his wife, Linda, of Hagerstown, Md. and a daughter-in-law, Barb Humbert of New Cumberland, W. Va. Deceased are a son, James C. Humbert, III; two grandchildren, Jason Christopher Humbert and Christina Michelle Holloway and a sister, Sonia Cesarino.
Family and friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. on Sunday in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, Pa. where the funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, December 28, 2015 with Pastor H. David McElroy officiating.
Interment will follow at Monongahela Hill Cemetery, Mapletown with military honors accorded by Cumberland American Legion Post 400, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491 and the U. S. Army.
Valley Lodge No. 459, F. & A. M. will conduct Masonic Services at 7:30 P.M. on Sunday in the funeral home.
