John Lorence of Carmichaels passed peacefully into eternity Monday, May 2, 2016. He was born November 22, 1954, in Clarksville, a son of John Lorence Sr. and Dorothy Irene White Lorence.
Surviving are his wife, Denise Marie (Watton) Lorence; two sisters, Colleen Nan Valosen and Kim Doreen Lorence and a brother, Kevin Duane Lorence (Mariangela DeFrancesco) and a cousin with whom he was raised, Cindy Moore.
Mr. Lorence was a hero to his nieces and nephews. He was lovingly called "Oach" by his family. He graduated summa cum laude from Waynesburg University in 1977. He then began a lifelong career dedicated to advancing the cause of people with disabilities. He worked with lawmakers in all levels of government to enact legislation that would promote the causes of people who face challenges. He organized many demonstrations on behalf of people with disabilities, putting himself in danger to be a very visible advocate. He received recognition and awards for his efforts, both locally and nationally, which were key in advancing the cause that was his passion.
At an early age, Mr. Lorence was stricken with muscular dystrophy, which advanced rapidly, resulting in limited mobility. The disease did not dim his vision or hinder his pursuit of equality and inclusion for others with similar problems.
A celebration of Mr. Lorence's life is being planned by the family.
