George A. Rice, Sr., 86, of Carmichaels, Pa., died unexpectedly on Thursday, August 11, 2016 in his home. He was born August 8, 1930 in Cumberland Township, Greene County, Pa., a son of the late Arthur Elmer and Ethel Leona (McWilliams) Rice. Mr. Rice resided in Cumberland Township all of his life and began working as a heavy equipment operator and welder for Cumberland Township in 1979. He played bass guitar with "The Countrymen" for many years. On October 15, 1981, he became a member of the Carmichaels and Cumberland Township Volunteer Fire Company and served as trustee and flea market chairman for many years. Mr. Rice was also a member of the Greene County Firemen's Association, the Western Pennsylvania Firemen's Association and the Southwestern Pennsylvania Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs Association. He was a social member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491. On January 20, 1950, he married Julia Yanak, who died March 30, 1991.
Surviving are two sons, George A. Rice, Jr. and his wife, Stephanie of Greensboro, Pa. and Dale Michael Rice of Waynesburg, Pa.; three daughters, Debra Chyben and her husband, John, of Berea, Ohio, Georgeanne Severini and her husband, David, of Carmichaels and Nancy Howard and her husband, Duane, of Carmichaels; eight grandchildren, John Chyben and his wife, Katie, Heidi Dulaney and her husband, Chris, Dava Severini, Brianna Kolencik and her husband, Mike, Kelly Gouzd and her husband, Zachary, Rachel Staggers and her husband, Tony, Julianna Bagley and her husband, James and Marcus Howard; nine great grandchildren and a brother-in law, Eugene Palone, of Rices Landing, Pa. Deceased are two sisters, Dolores "Honey" Palone and Mary Jo Rice.
Family and friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. on Sunday in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, Pa. where a blessing service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, August 15, 2016, followed at 11:00 A.M. by a Mass of the Resurrection at St. Hugh Roman Catholic Church, Carmichaels with the Rev. John M. Bauer as celebrant. Interment will follow at Hewitt Cemetery, Rices Landing, Pa.
The Carmichaels and Cumberland Township Volunteer Fire Company will conduct a memorial service at 7:00 P.M. on Sunday in the funeral home.
