David "Butch" Hartley, 69, of Eighty Four, Pa. and formerly of Carmichaels and Rices Landing, Pa., died at 12:20 P.M. on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at the Washington Hospital, Washington, Pa. He was born November 7, 1947 in Waynesburg, Pa., a son of the late Kenneth M. and Dorothy Aldine (King) Hartley. Mr. Hartley was a 1965 graduate of the Carmichaels Area High School and attended Salem College for three and one half years before serving with the Army National Guard. He was a former member of the Greene Valley Presbyterian Church in Carmichaels. Mr. Hartley first worked at the Nemacolin Mine until its closing and then at the Labelle Processing Company. From 1987 until 1990, he served as president of the Northern Continental Operating Company. From 1990 until present, he was president of the Homer City Coal Processing Company and in 1997, became vice president of CLIUSA, Inc. in Finleyville, Pa. During his career, Mr. Hartley was instrumental in developing many coal processing facilities and techniques throughout the world, including India, China, Turkey and Romania. He most enjoyed spending time with his family, playing golf and skiing. On August 29, 1970, he married Karen L. Collage, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, David J. Hartley and his wife, Jenn, of Canonsburg, Pa.; a daughter, Shannon B. Smereczniak and her husband, Jeff, of Canonsburg; four grandchildren, Hannah Smereczniak, Justin Smereczniak, Jonathan Hartley and Dylan Hartley; a brother, Frank D. Hartley and his wife, Maria, of Latrobe, Pa.; two sisters, Mary M. Zimmerman of Waynesburg and Ruth A. Osborne and her husband, Gary, of Carmichaels and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Deceased in addition to his parents is a brother-in-law, Jack K. Waggett.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. on Friday at the Piatt & Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Ave., Washington where the funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, December 3, 2016 with the Rev. Harold O. Kelley and Pastor Darrell Edgar officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray, Pa. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Colon Cancer Alliance, 1025 Vermont Ave., NW - Suite 1066, Washington, DC 20005. Arrangements are entrusted to Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Directors, Inc., Charles R. Piatt, owner/supervisor, Lawrence K. Donovan, director.
