J. Paul Phillips, 80, of Goshen, Ind., formerly of Nemacolin, Pa., died on Sunday, March 26, 2017, in Courtyard Healthcare of Goshen following a lengthy illness. He was born September 10, 1936, in Carmichaels, Pa., a son of the late James J. and Josephine (Bruckner) Phillips. While growing up on the family farm in Cumberland Township, he attended the Fairdale Free Methodist Church as a young man. He was a 1954 graduate of Cumberland Township High School and served with the Pennsylvania National Guard.
Mr. Phillips spent most of his life as a semi truck driver, retiring from Schneider National after many years of employment. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Chauffeurs, Stablemen, and Helpers of America, American Federation of Labor. After retiring, he worked for Foremost Transport, Inc. of Goshen transporting recreational vehicles to dealerships across the country. Whenever he was on the road, his beloved Chihuahua, Misty, was always by his side.
Mr. Phillips was a free spirit who enjoyed motorcycle riding, traveling, and country music. In retirement, he was an avid fisherman. Mr. Phillips readily made friends wherever he went and had a very generous heart.
His wife of 26 years, Carole (Buck) DiBiase Phillips died on October 9, 2006. Surviving are a sister, Mary Phillips Mayle, wife of the late Harvey Mayle, of Erie, Pa.; a brother, George A. Phillips and his wife, Jan, of Carmichaels; a stepson, John T. DiBiase Jr. of Carmichaels; two step grandsons, John T. DiBiase, III and Jeremy L. DiBiase; three nephews, David Mayle and his wife, Sandy, and Daniel Mayle and his wife, Becky, all of Erie, and John Mayle and his wife, Pam, of Summerville, S. C. and numerous great nephews, a great niece and cousins. Mr. Phillips also had a son, James, and a daughter, Jeanne, by a previous marriage.
A one-hour private viewing for family and friends from Goshen was held on March 29, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home in Goshen. A special and caring neighbor, Colleen Willits and Pastor Bobby Musselman, who offered a prayer, were among those welcomed. Cremation services were provided by Yoder-Culp.
Family and friends are welcome to visit the family from 12:30 until 2:30 P.M. on Saturday, April 22, 2017 in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, Pa. A memorial service will follow at 2:30 P.M. with the Rev. Dr. Donald P. Wilson officiating.
Private inurnment of his cremains will take place at Greene County Memorial Park where Mr. Phillips will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Carole.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Humane Society of Greene County, 183 Jefferson Rd, Waynesburg, PA 15370, to the American Lung Association or to a charity of the donor's choice.
