Carl Edward Sterbutzel, 78, of McClellandtown, Pa., passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 24, 2019 at his home surrounded by his loving family. "Speedy" was born July 16, 1940 in McClellandtown, a son of the late Robert Leo and Mary Margaret (Phillippi) Sterbutzel. After graduating from German Township High School in 1959, Speedy forged a career in earthwork construction, working first for S. J. Groves and later for Ryan, Inc. He shaped the earth and built roads in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Oregon, Florida and internationally in Saudi Arabia. Speedy will be remembered for his Corvette and antique car collections and was a member of the Mon Valley Region Antique Automobile Club of America. He was a devoted NASCAR fan, not surprising for the man nicknamed "Speedy." Speedy will also be remembered for his 3 A.M. breakfast feasts and 10 A.M. ice cream parties for his grandchildren. He was a loyal member of Valley Lodge No. 459, F. & A. M., Masontown, the Uniontown Lodge of Perfection and the Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Pittsburgh.
On June 24, 1961, he married his loving wife of 57 years, Judith Rae Fette, who survives. Also surviving are four children, Carla Franks (Gene); Amy Ryan of Masontown, Carl "Jed" Sterbutzel, Jr. (Terry); and Jesse Sterbutzel (Jennifer); seven grandchildren, Gene Franks (Ashley), Emily Ryan, Kimberly Ankrom (Joel), Caroline Ryan, Richard Ryan, Joshua Sterbutzel and Danica Sterbutzel; four brothers, Raymond Sterbutzel, Kenneth Sterbutzel, William James Sterbutzel and David Sterbutzel; a sister, Lois Layhew and several nieces and nephews. Speedy was anticipating the birth of his first great grandchild.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers Robert Sterbutzel, Jr., Rolla Richard Sterbutzel, Donald Sterbutzel and Vincent Keith Sterbutzel; a sister, Mary Margaret Matzus and a son-in-law, Richard Ryan.
The family extends their special thanks to the caregivers at Amedisys Hospice for their assistance during Speedy's final days.
Family and friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. on Saturday, January 26, 2019 in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, Pa.
Valley Lodge No. 459 will conduct Masonic Services at 7:30 P.M. in the funeral home, followed at 8:00 P.M. by a blessing service with the Rev. James Bump officiating.
