Frederick "Rick" Gapen, 77, of Barrackville, W. Va. and formerly of Headlee Heights, Greene County, Pa., passed away on Monday, September 16, 2024. He was surrounded by his loving family. He was born November 1, 1946 in Monongahela, Pa., a son of the late George B. and Virginia (Lardin) Gapen. Rick attended Mapletown High School and was a member of the Mapletown United Methodist Church during his younger years. He worked the family farm for many years before working as a heavy equipment operator for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and also the West Virginia Department of Highways. Rick was an avid gardener, hunter, fisherman and enjoyed riding his motorcycle with his late wife, Mary. Most especially, he was a proud father and grandfather. On August 12, 1983, he married Mary F. Michalski, who died January 5, 2012.
Surviving are his children, Tammy J. Hulderman of Naples, Fla., Eric L. Gapen of Waynesburg, Pa., Mark C. Gapen (Heather) of Severn, Md., Tracy J. Eye (Joshua) of Morgantown and Matthew R. Gapen (Brigitte) of Fairmont, W. Va.; eight grandchildren, Katherine, David, Samuel, Dina, Miriam, Liam, Atticus and Julien; cousins, Matt, Danny and Harley and other cousins; closest friend, Ray Mallory and several grand dogs. Deceased is a brother, George Ben Gapen.
Family and friends are welcome from 5 to 8 P.M. on Friday in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, Pa. where the funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, September 21, 2024. The Rev. Kenneth Haines will officiate.
Interment will follow at Monongahela Hill Cemetery, Mapletown, Pa.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Mapletown United Methodist Church.
