George S. Gomez, 83, of Nemacolin, Pa., passed away at 2:50 A.M. on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 in the Lasosky's Personal Care Home, Clarksville. Pa. He was born July 5, 1935 in East Millsboro, Pa., a son of the late Rafael and Phyllis I. (Philips) Gomez. Mr. Gomez was a 1954 graduate of Cumberland Township High School, Carmichaels, Pa. and served with the United States Navy for 8 years. In 1955, he participated with Admiral Byrd's last expedition to the Antarctic in "Operation Deep Freeze I." On July 22, 1957 he married Rose Marie Posgay, who passed away January 9, 1996. George was a member of the Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church, Nemacolin.
After Mr. Gomez's military service, he studied drafting at the Technicians Training School, Uniontown, Pa. He worked as a design draftsman for the Sterling Faucet Company, taught drafting and vocational math at the Fayette Institute, Uniontown for six years, worked at the Gateway Coal Company for 15 years and retired from SCI- Greene after seven years of service.
Mr. Gomez was a life member of the American Legion Post 400, Carmichaels, American Veterans Post 300, Uniontown, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491, Carmichaels and a member with the National Wood Carvers Association. He enjoyed carving decorative decoys.
Surviving are two daughters, Ellen "Lee" Cubic and her husband, Drew, of Nemacolin, Georgetta "Gege" Roberts and her husband, Patrick, of Rices Landing, Pa.; three grandchildren, Drew Cubic Jr. and his wife, Ashley, Nathan Roberts, and Lucas Cubic; two great grandchildren, Alaina Ann Roberts and Andrew Steven Cubic and three sisters-in-law, Sheila Gomez of Uniontown, Ellen Gomez of Shermansdale, Pa. and Josephine McDowell of Shippingsburg, Pa. Deceased are three brothers, David Gomez, James Gomez, and Rafael Gomez, Jr. and a sister, Carmella Zangla.
Family and friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. on Sunday in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Carmichaels, Pa. where a blessing service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, October 22, 2018 with the Rev. J. Francis Frazer officiating. Interment will follow to Laurel Point Cemetery, Carmichaels with military honors accorded by Cumberland American Legion Post 400 and the United States Navy.
