John W. "Hoof" Lough

March 11, 1949 — January 26, 2025

John William "Hoof" Lough of Carmichaels, PA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 26, 2025. He was in his 76th year of life and left this world surrounded by family and his favorite music. John was the oldest son born to William Don Lough and Virginia Lee "Ginny" Baily Lough on March 11, 1949. He graduated from Mapletown High School in 1967. Shortly after graduating, John enlisted in the U. S. Air Force. He was trained as an aircraft and warning radar repairman, spending most of his four year career on Montauk Air Station in New York State. After his honorable discharge from the USAF as an E4 Sgt., John devoted 36 years of hard work as a lineman at Alltel/Windstream Telephone Company where he made many lifelong friends. Hoof was a member of the Local 1929 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers serving at one time as vice president. He was a member of Pat's Pub Pool League Team, Bethel Park Outdoorsmen Association and Jessop Boat Club. Most significantly… the man could tell a story! Hoof's stories always left you on the edge of your seat waiting for the "Hoof-factor". John is survived by his wife Bonnie Jones Lough and his daughters, Regan Lee (Brett) and Farrah Joneen Doman (Bobby). He was also known as Pap Pap to Miranda, Addison John, Troy, and Devan. John inspired Miranda and Devan to be creative and displayed every piece of their art proudly. He was proud of the twins, Addison and Troy, who shared his love of country by representing their school in the Air Force Junior ROTC. John is also survived by his brothers, Paul and Blair Lough. He was known as "Fun Uncle John" to many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. John was preceded in death by his parents and his mother and father-in-law who thought the world of him, and his nephew, Tommy, whom he had a hand in raising. John was known as Hoof by those who loved him and gave nicknames to everyone. To say he was loved is an understatement. His impact was felt every time they needed a shoulder to cry on, a hand to help or just his signature line, "relax", to give them that calming feeling that only he could provide. He had a heart of gold and served everyone expecting nothing in return. Anyone could walk into his home and leave all their worries at the door. John was extremely proud of his daughters. He loved watching them dance and cheer growing up, while also teaching them to appreciate nature. They spent a lot of time camping, fishing, hiking, making home movies, and he even tried to get them to love hunting. He always included the neighborhood children and their friends. He traveled all over the country to visit Regan and her family as often as possible, dropping everything to be there after the births of his grandchildren and was a huge part of her hurricane cleanup crew, along with his brother, Blair. Farrah "Joneen" was appropriately named after John and the two were best friends. They shared a love for motorcycles, music and traveling around the country in his infamous camouflaged van. He encouraged her dream to open her own dance studio and played a significant role behind the scenes doing construction, building props, greeting show guests, making special trinkets for the students he had a connection to and even making an appearance on the red carpet. John also had a special relationship with each of his brothers. He and Paul were close in age and joined at the hip during childhood and in their formative years. Blair was his youngest brother and he became a father figure to him after their parents passed away. He always made time to visit both brothers in Ohio and Maryland. He was so happy when Blair retired near him. He loved his family more than anything and considered friends as family too. Special thanks to those who brought him joy in his final days, Coon Dog, Joe, Jack Malinda, Chipmunk, Roo, Tim, Tiggy and Annie, Rhonda, Doug, Alberto & Jimmy, brothers-in-law Jack and Blair and his "Blonde-tourage", Petie and Hadley, Piper and Cam. Our family would like to thank the many people who enabled Hoof to spend the last two years in his home, including the care team. John wished to be cremated and will have a private burial with military honors. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to your favorite charity in honor of Hoof's generosity.
