Mervin L. Barbe, age 88 of Carmichaels, Pa., formerly of Greensboro, Pa., passed away on Thursday, May 30, 2024 in the Pittsburgh VA Medical Center, Pittsburgh, Pa. He was born November 24, 1935 in Washington, Pa. a son of the late Charles Alexander and Frances Gertrude (McClelland) Barbe, Jr. Mr. Barbe graduated from Mapletown High School in 1953 and shortly afterwards entered the US Air Force, Strategic Air Command and NCO Preparatory School at Ramey Air Force Base, Puerto Rico. Upon completion of his military service he went to work at Automatic Electric installing telephone equipment and later in Fulton, NY he worked for Owego County Telephone Company as a telephone installer and worked his way to become a manager. He decided to move back to the area he grew up in Greensboro and started Barbe Construction with his father and also owned and operated the Village Inn for many years. Mr. Barbe then lived in the Frederick, Md. and Martinsburg, W.Va. areas, where he owned and operated a contracting business specializing in interior and exterior trim work in the DC area. He was a member of the Carmichaels American Legion Post #400 and VFW Post #3491 both of Carmichaels. Mr. Barbe, with experience over the years, became an extraordinary woodworker and loved spending time with his family and friends. On October 9, 1959 he married the love of his life, which he met while working in N.Y., Carolyn Kay (Needham) who passed away October 16, 2009.
Surviving are two daughters, Amy B. Barbe of Carmichaels and Vanessa F. Routzahn (Wesley) of Smithsburg, Md.; three grandchildren, Kaitlyn Thistlewaite Crockard, Audrey and Sawyer Routzahn; two great grandchildren, Karlee and Emilee Crockard; two brothers, Charles A. Barbe, III of Rochester, N.Y. and Bruce M. Barbe (Barbara) of Southlake, Tex.; a sister Judy S. Ross (Dave) of Greensboro; also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Deceased in addition to his parents and wife is a son Craig L. Barbe and sister Eva L. Miller.
Family and friends are welcome for a Celebration of Life from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Yoskovich Funeral Home, Martin J. Yoskovich, Funeral Director/Owner, Aaron S. Walker, Funeral Director, Carmichaels, Pa. where the funeral service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2024 with the Rev. Dr. Donald P. Wilson officiating. Military rites will be accorded immediately following the service. Interment will be private.
